Smart Export Guarantee

Smart Export Guarantee

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme offers payments to individuals who export surplus renewable electricity produced by their solar panels or other renewable sources back to the National Grid.
If you live in England, Scotland or Wales, you could benefit from a Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariff. Smart Export Guarantee tariffs are not available to residents in Northern Ireland.

What is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?

The Smart Export Guarantee, also known as the SEG tariff launched on 1 January 2020 and is a government-backed initiative. After the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) scheme was discontinued for new applicants in March 2019, the government acknowledged the importance of compensating small-scale renewable energy producers for the electricity they export to the grid. As a result, they introduced the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) to address this requirement.

Through the SEG scheme, individuals who generate surplus electricity from their solar panels can receive payments for exporting it back to the National Grid. This allows homeowners to sell any unused energy produced from renewable sources, such as the sun or wind, to the grid instead of letting it go unused and wasted.
If your home or business produces more electricity (via renewable sources) than it consumes, you may qualify for payments under the Smart Export Guarantee scheme

Eligibility for SEG:

To be eligible for the SEG scheme and be able to apply for an SEG tariff, you must be generating electricity from either one of the renewable energy technologies mentioned below:

  • Solar PV Panels
  • Hydro power.
  • Onshore wind
  • Micro-Combined heat and power
  • Anaerobic digestion

You must also:

  • Be the owner of the generation unit e.g., solar panels.
  • Have a generation unit with a capacity of up to 5MW.
  • Have a registered smart meter installed that can record energy that’s exported to the grid, on a half-hourly basis.
  • Have an installation that is certified to the MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme), or Flexi-Orb.
  • Can opt out of FIT payments. or be prepared to lose your FIT export payment if you move to SEG.
  • Not be receiving SEG payments from another license.

How to apply for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariff?

Major energy companies provide compensation for the renewable energy that is fed back into the grid, and they determine their own Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariff rates. As part of the scheme, all licensed energy companies serving 150,000 or more customers must offer at least one SEG tariff. While they are obligated to pay more than zero for the exported energy, there can be significant variations between the most favourable and least favourable tariffs. It is advisable to compare options from different providers before deciding.
